The demand for teaching of English to young children has grown immensely worldwide in recent years. Many teachers find themselves ill-prepared for teaching young children as it requires a unique set of skills from a typical teaching environment. As a result of the increased attention to English globally, parents are sending their children to language schools after regular school hours and governments are introducing English into their elementary curriculum. These trends have led to an increasing need for teachers worldwide.

This exhaustive online course helps the trainees gain an in depth knowledge and acquire valuable skills regarding how to teach English to young learners.

  • Why is there a need for a separate Teacher Training Course for Children?
  • If I have been teaching English or if I have already completed a Teacher Training Course in English , do I need another course to teach Young learners?

The answer to all these questions is a YES. Many English teachers find themselves teaching in primary school even though they have not been trained for this level. There is no doubt that the role and importance of English has risen in many countries. As a result an increasing number of parents are sending their children to language schools after regular school hours, and governments are introducing English into their elementary curriculum. These trends have led to an increasing need for training.

As you know, the adult world and the child’s world are not the same, particularly when it comes to learning. The young learners ranging from 3 years to 12 years of age are constantly passing through developmental stages or milestones. What is applicable to one age group will not be the same for another. The EFL teacher needs to be aware of the psychological and mental stages of the students in order to make the teaching-learning process effective. For children the ‘here and now’ is most important therefore language needs to be associated with the senses in order to be meaningful.

Theories on child psychology tell us that the brain develops till age eight, so the inputs during this phase need to be carefully monitored. The child from birth to age two is an attentive listener and this listening skill continues through out life and based on this skill we acquire language. So the teacher plays a vital role while helping children learn a language, since in an ESL or EFL class the teacher may be the only source of English. Therefore WHAT and HOW English will be taught at this level needs to be first understood and well thought by the teacher before he/ she faces the class.

PLEASE NOTE: The courses above are supplementary certificate courses and can only be taken in conjunction with and upon completion of one of our 4-week residential TEFL courses.
