The answer to all these questions is a YES. Many English teachers find themselves teaching in primary school even though they have not been trained for this level. There is no doubt that the role and importance of English has risen in many countries. As a result an increasing number of parents are sending their children to language schools after regular school hours, and governments are introducing English into their elementary curriculum. As you know, the adult world and the child’s world are not the same, particularly when it comes to learning. The young learners ranging from 3 years to 12 years of age are constantly passing through developmental stages or milestones. What is applicable to one age group will not be the same for another. The EFL teacher needs to be aware of the psychological and mental stages of the students in order to make the teaching-learning process effective. For children the ‘here and now’ is most important therefore language needs to be associated with the senses in order to be meaningful.
Theories on child psychology tell us that the brain develops till age eight, so the inputs during this phase need to be carefully monitored. The child from birth to age two is an attentive listener and this listening skill continues through out life and based on this skill we acquire language.
